About Danish boats

The ancestry of this type of traditional double-ended Danish fishing boat goes back to the viking ships of more than 1000 years ago. The development of this type of ship enabled the nordic people to expand their area of influence over large parts of the northern hemishere.

The somewhat onesided tales emphasizing the vikings as seafaring raiders only has in the meantime been debunked by historians research.

The primary use of viking ships was trade, but the numerous invasions of many coastal areas in Europe is also a fact- they left their cultural marks in Brittany, Scotland, England and around the Baltic.

The artful construction of relatively flat-bottomed ships with lightweight lapstrake planking and bent frames allowed access to shallow waters and the exploration of the adjacent lands.
The ships could land and be launched directly from the beaches.

The flat bottoms made it possible to transport the boats with the help of rollers large distances over land.
Many of todays Danish fishing boats still share some of those quaracteristics. Of course construction methods have changed, but one can still find many fishing boats pulled up the sandy beaches of northwestern Jylland when they return from their work at sea.

Hjarbæk: A true little gem on the shore of southeastern Limfjord

It can be found about 10km northwest of Viborg. The small harbor of Hjarbaek is a true treasure trove of classic wooden boats. A very "hyggelig" place with a view over part of the large, beautiful Limfjord. A comfortable bench right at the shore invites for a picnic...

, an association dedicated to maintaining the tradition of this type of boat and to carry the knowledge of the sjaegt, its construction, maintenance and handling on the water into the future.

Model of a Danish fishing boat (radio-controlled)

A few years ago I discovered the book "Wooden Boat Designs" by Christian Nielsen. It is a translation of "Danske Bådtyper" by the same author. My favorite for a model is the Nyborg boat "Helga". So I decided to build an in-the-water model of a model boat with a design close to that ofthe "Helga". It is not an exact recreation of its design as per Christian Nielsen`s drawing. The model`s scale is 1:20, which brings it to length of 510 mm. It is not an exact version in regard to the scantlings like frame size, spacing and planking. It is very important to me that the model can be put into water - it is a "serious" toy! As you can see below it worked out quite nicely. By operating its motor it looks and behaves almost like the real thing. Including the wave pattern.

The design of the model

The first step was to manually draw preliminary lines of the hull on paper. By using the main proportions of "Helga" but changing the shape of the main lines (sheer, keel and stations) a bit. Scale about 1:20, which makes the hull 515mm long, beam 210mm.

From this preliminary design I generated a new lines plan with the aid of a 3D CAD-program (Delftship), which is freely available to the hobby user. The model was actually built from the pencil drawing, but after building the hull I took the "as-built" dimensions and created this as a final record.

The jig of the hull represents the interior of the hull shape. It was developed to build a few models with the same hull shape due to popular demand by relatives and friends.

My life as a boat builder

The first boat I built boat was Cajun Cat, a 16ft classic catboat. By the 1970`s this boat type had become the desire of a few classic boat enthusiasts on the East Coast of the US . It is well documented in "The Cat Boat Book", from there I took my hints to built Cajun Cat, which was made from Airex foam sheets and fiberglass over a male mold.

After being 20 years with the family "Consul" needed an overhaul on the outside to prepare it for a fare well , of course it was hard.

"Consul" in its georgeus wooden beauty looked like someones piano! Who would want to put his piano in the water?? That`s kind of the contemporary approach to wooden boats. People are affraid of maintenance ...because they have no idea what to do . So, the exterior was redone to make it easier for the new boat owner to keep it up to shape. Sorry, you wooden boat nuts.
